Sociologist Isidora Jarić is a full professor at the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade and the author of several significant scientific monographs. After the book Parenting Under Risk (2017), a new monograph by Isidora Jarić, Education on Compassion, is available to the public. The book has been published in cooperation with The Scientific Society for the History of Health Culture and The Center for Cooperation with the EU of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade.
Isidora Jarić examines the problem of the civilisational taboo related to death and dying, which results in social blindness to the everyday reality of palliative patients, their family members and their caregivers. The author analyzed this phenomenon on material collected with the help of interviews with doctors, nurses and technicians, caregivers, social workers, psychologists, public policymakers, and palliative patients and their family members. The book Education on Compassion contributes to the understanding of the connection between different social subsystems in the articulation of the social response to the growing need for palliative care. It provides a critical review that opens up a deeply neglected and traumatic social issue but also encouragement, inspiration and warning.
